- Experience: What is your current administrative position? How long have you served in that capacity? What was your path to obtain it?
I am currently in my third year as an Assistant Principal for FHN. Prior to that I served as an AP at both Sparta and Grand River Prep. I started my career teaching on the East side of the state at what was then Lapeer East High School, and is now Lapeer High School. I’ve been an AP for almost 10 years and a teacher for about 8 years before that. - Performance: Tell us about any awards, accolades or important points of pride related to your career.
Throughout my career, there have been some moments of pride that stand out. The first was helping bring the LINKs program to Lapeer East High School. The benefits that this program provided for students and peers were profound and made all of the work worth the effort. The second was transforming the climate and culture at Grand River Prep through collaborative leadership. We focused on building meaningful relationships, and that paid major dividends for the entire school community. The last point of pride is helping lead the transition to an AI infused educational environment at FHPS. Working together with a team of teachers from our 3 school’s attendance areas, we are helping lead the support and focus around AI to help our staff prepare students for the new world that we face. - Education: What post-secondary degrees have you obtained and from where? What additional continuing education have you received? Do you have a particular area of focus/expertise?
I have a Masters in Ed. Leadership from University of Michigan – Flint and a Ed. Specialist degree from Central Michigan University (Fire Up Chips!). For continuing education I’ve received and led extensive training on everything from Restorative Practices, to PBIS, to Artificial Intelligence.
My current area of focus is on AI as this technology is going to dramatically transform all aspects of our lives. Figuring out the right times and places to deploy this technology in our classrooms is essential for developing our students’ preparedness for the workforce and society in general. Knowing when we are working on foundational skills versus scaffolded learning is a key understanding for understanding when to use AI and when to use other methods. - Statement of Intent: Why are you seeking this position on the MASSP Board of Directors?
I am excited about the opportunity to continue to serve on the Board of Directors so that I can continue to help build and support Assistant Principals and Deans in West Michigan. This group of leaders is currently in the trenches, excelling at providing a high quality educational environment for their students while taking care of a litany of unseen tasks to help a school function. By continuing to work with and for this group of leaders, I hope to help lead these APs and Deans for the next steps in their professional careers while supporting them in their current roles.
