The University of Washington's Center for Educational Leadership's (UW-CEL), 5D/5D+ Teacher Evaluation System is a state approved evaluation tool that Michigan school districts, public school academies and intermediate school districts may adopt and use to grow teacher practice, improve student learning, and evaluate educator effectiveness.

MASSP in partnership with UW-CEL provides multiple professional learning opportunities for administrators and teachers that are available face-to-face and online through self-paced or facilitated modules.  During each of these trainings, participants develop a better understanding of the 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning™ and the related indicators in the 5D+™ Rubric for Instructional Growth and Teacher Evaluation.

  • The 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning™ instructional framework (5D) is a research-based tool to help schools and districts create shared vision and common language for teaching and learning, scaffold the development of expertise and grow high-quality instructional practices. Developed from a multiyear research effort at the University of Washington, the 5D instructional framework combines vision statements and guiding questions to help educators reflect on the core elements of effective teaching: purpose, student engagement, curriculum and pedagogy, assessment for student learning, and classroom environment and culture.

  • The 5D+ Rubric for Instructional Growth and Teacher Evaluation (5D+) is a growth-oriented tool for improving instruction and student learning.  The 5D+ Rubric is intended to:
    • Provide a shared and common vision of high quality teaching along a continuum of expertise.
    • Serve as an Inquiry-based growth model, not a checklist.
    • Join instructional leaders and teachers as co-learning around a teachers practice.
    • Be accessible and actionable.
    • Focus on equity within each dimension.
    • Anchor classroom observations and continuous conversation about teaching and learning.
