Chippewa Valley Schools Policy: Parent / Community Engagement
Vape:
Vaping in school not only results in school discipline as outlined below, but also a civil infraction fine from the Clinton Township Police Department. Vaping and all tobacco products are illegal for individuals of any age on school property.
- First offense: 3 days Suspension, a fine and student assistance intervention;
- Second Offense: 5 day Suspension, a fine with additional student assistance;
- Third Offense: 7 day Suspension and a fine.

Lake Orion Policy: Coaching and ISS
CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES – Consumption or Possession: (16 – 22 points)
Consumption or possession of any controlled substance, dangerous drug, prescription drug, counterfeit drug, or intoxicating substance, or possession or use of paraphernalia prior to entering school property or a school event, or while on school property or at a school event is prohibited. (See the Substance Abuse Corrective Action Policy-below)
K-12 SUBSTANCE ABUSE CORRECTIVE ACTION Possession and/or use
Any student who chooses to consume alcohol and/or controlled substances prior to entering school property and/or a school sponsored event OR any possession and/or consumption of alcohol and/or a controlled substance or paraphernalia and/or facsimile of the above, by a student while on school property and/or at a school sponsored event will be considered in direct violation of Board policy and will result in the following:
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd Offense
The student shall be suspended from school for a period of time:
- 1st Offense: 3 days out-of-school suspension (OSS) and 1-day in-school-suspension (ISS). The student may see the Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator, who may provide treatment referrals.
- 2nd Offense: 10 days out-of-school suspension. The Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator may provide treatment referrals. A recommendation of expulsion from school may be made.
NOTE: The School District will not be financially responsible for costs incurred in assessment, evaluation, or treatment. Payment for services or materials provided by professionals who are not school employees will be the responsibility of the student and family.

To reduce your suspension by one day, you may participate in an online education course, at your expense.
By 12:00 noon on the second-to-last day of suspension, please submit a certificate of completion, and individual notes (two pages, single-spaced) from the course taken to your administrator.

John Glen High School (Bangor Twp. Schools): Restorative Presentation
In the event of a Category 6 Violation “possession or use of a vape” students and families will have the option of a 10 day suspension or an essay and presentation in lieu of the suspension for a first offense. In the event of a second offense the student will be given a 10 day suspension.
Essay and presentation guidelines: The student will have 3 days after the infraction to complete and present the required assignment including the presentation. The presentation can be in a form that is agreed upon by the student and administrator. The presentation will be held at 2:30 pm on the agreed date. Attendance at the presentation will be a family member of the student, both administrators, school resource officer, a counselor, and three students. Any student who does not complete the essay and presentation will be suspended for 10 days.
The essay and presentation will address the following:
- What are the physical effects of vaping on the body?
- What is the impact on the school community and the family when someone uses a vape?
- What are the steps that will be taken to stop using a vape?
- Identify support people and explain how they can help?

Belding High School: Coaching Model
Smoking/Tobacco: A student shall not smoke, chew, or otherwise use tobacco/marijuana. A student shall not, while on school property, have in his/her possession or under his/her control, tobacco/marijuana in any form. This includes electronic cigarettes, vaporizers, or any other device that simulates smoking any type of product, regardless whether they are manufactured, distributed, marketed, or sold under any product name or descriptor. Tobacco, nicotine, marijuana, or any device used for the delivery of these or similar products will be confiscated and will not be returned to students or parents. Students who are found to be in possession or use of an electronic cigarette/vape will be assigned to work with our Recovery Coach to begin a plan for active recovery and/or cessation.
