Breakout Sessions – Round 1

Say What!? Navigating Student Speech Issues in an Election Year

Jessica McNamara, Attorney, Thrun Law, P.C. & Jennifer Starlin, Attorney, Thrun Law, P.C.

The First Amendment often protects student speech in school. But when can an administrator discipline a student for something he or she says? And how does the location of the speech impact that analysis? As the 2024 election heats up, brush up on student speech basics and learn when the First Amendment protects political speech and how administrators can address student speech.

Breakout Sessions – Round 1

Relate. Retain. Repeat.

Derrick Sier, Team Builder, Mentor and World Renown hugger!

Retention is a never ending process. That means what you did to get them … you must continue doing to keep them. This forces organizations to look past shallow, fleeting rewards and invest more into creating a culture people consistently, willingly and eagerly opt into daily. How does that happen? Relate, retain and repeat.

Breakout Sessions – Round 1

Advancing Educational Equity: Empowering EACH Student in Every Class

Paul DeAngelis, Regional Director, Partnership Development, Equal Opportunity Schools
Session Presentation

Focusing on educational equity by increasing students’ access to advanced courses breaks down historical institutional barriers and better prepares students for post-secondary success. We will examine five intentional strategies for identifying and removing barriers, providing teachers training and support, developing student support systems, improving communication and awareness for students and parents, and shifting from being data-driven to being student-informed. We will also examine actionable data that will inform your work to support students.

Breakout Sessions – Round 1

AI Legal Implications for Schools

Adam Blaylock, Attorney, Miller Johnson

The rise of generative artificial intelligence has created new legal issues. This session will provide school leaders the tools to issue spot and leverage AI to their advantage – without creating liability for themselves or the schools. This session will give an overview of how AI works, how it’s being used in schools, and legal issues like: data integrity, academic integrity and student discipline, and ownership of work.

Breakout Sessions – Round 2

Shaping School Culture with SEL Strategies

Yvonne Swanson, Associate Principal, Henry Ford II HS, Utica Community Schools
Session Presentation

The assistant principal is a key driver in creating a positive school culture that benefits staff and students. The intentional and consistent use of social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies is the foundation for shaping a healthy school culture. The good news is that many of these strategies are high-yield, require minimal time, and are cost-effective! This session will provide actionable ideas for school leaders to begin using in their schools.

Breakout Sessions – Round 2

Effective Communication for the Assistant Principal

Ben Berger, Assistant Principal, Traverse City Central HS, MASSP Board of Directors
Session Presentation

Where there is a lack of communication the space is filled with negativity. Clear and concise communication is the fuel to a positive school culture. This session will detail the communication roles of the assistant principal to all stakeholders (teachers, families, students, and your lead principal). Attendees will be exposed to communication system examples as well as time to reflect on your current practices and collaborate with colleagues to make improvements.

Keynote Sessions

Relationships – The Great Retainer

Derrick Sier, Team Builder, Mentor and World Renown hugger!
Session Presentation

Retention is on the radar of most organizations. It is difficult enough getting good people to come work alongside the company, but keeping them is another high-stress variable which costs companies a lot of money, time and other valuable resources. However, companies which have the highest retention rates have a few things in common. Great relationships is one of them. This workshop is designed to explore the impact of relationship on retention and why it is one the most interesting and predictable components of employee satisfaction.
