Michigan’s Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year are innovative-servant leaders, who show integrity, implement instructional leadership, are good communicators, support staff and students, and much more. We are fortunate in the state of Michigan to have many incredible, high quality leaders who serve as Assistant Principals and Principals in our middle schools, high schools and CTE centers.
To ensure that principals get the recognition they deserve, last year we announced, with the Michigan Association of Student Councils and Honor Societies (MASC/MAHS), that we had combined educator and student input to select and honor one Assistant Principal of the Year (APoY) and one Principal of the Year (PoY). Please see below for process/timeline and read the earlier article outlining rationale behind the decision.
During the 2020 Award season, MASSP congratulated two outstanding and very deserving individuals. Our 2020 POY recipient, Todd Simmons (Pewamo-Westphalia High School), was honored at the 2020 Student State Leadership Conference and was scheduled to be honored at our 2020 Edcon.
Rounding out the final phase of our previous process, our 2020 APOY Colleen Gruben (Warren Woods Tower High School) was scheduled to be formally recognized at our 2020 Edcon program as well. Due to the pandemic, both Todd and Colleen will be congratulated again and recognized at our upcoming ReCon program, scheduled for October 19 and 20.
As noted, the 2021 APOY was selected this last spring and the official announcement and recognition of the winner will begin this fall. Knowing that the timeline for applying, selection and recognition can be tricky to navigate between the Michigan and National office, check out some important dates below.
Process / Timeline
Changing the process required structural changes in the application, the selection committees and an adjustment of timelines to meet the national recognition program deadlines. Below are important dates:
- November 2020: Michigan 2021 PoY & 2022 APoY Nomination Application Open
- March 2021: Michigan 2021 PoY & 2022 APoY Nomination Application Due
Please note dates are subject to change. Once selected by the committees, MASSP and MASC/MAHS will communicate with the winners regarding National important dates and recognition. National recipients are invited to attend and be recognized at the National Principals Conference in July of 2021.
