On Thursday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) issued a rapid public health alert to update face mask recommendations to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. This guidance provides recommendations for face mask use in many settings, including in classrooms. Because most students remain unvaccinated, MDHHS recommends that schools continue to follow the COVID-19 prevention strategies outlined in the current version of the CDC’s Operational Strategy for K-12 Schools for at least the remainder of the 2020-2021 academic school year, including universal masking when indoors. MDHHS also recommends that all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, should wear face masks while playing contact sports indoors and that individuals who are not yet fully vaccinated should wear face masks while playing contact sports outdoors.
