As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I can’t help but think about all of the people and things that I am thankful for. One of the biggest factors included in that list is my career in education. There are so many parts of our jobs that can weigh us down or cause frustration, but I have learned to take each day as it comes, and find gratitude with even the smallest of gestures or words. You see, for me, my school family is just as important as my regular family. This is a family that takes chances, cheers each other on, and is always there when you need them. I am grateful for each and every one of them.

We have recently started practicing the art of Mindfulness here at Huron High School. One counselor pushes into rooms where students may need emotional support the most, and she walks the class through peaceful, meditative-like sessions to help work through past trauma and feelings. It is amazing to see the transformation of some students when they are given the tools to cope with their emotions. I am thankful for our counselors and support staff.

My administrative assistant greets me each morning with a smile on her face, and surprises me with Panera during the week just because she wants to. She is a listening ear, an extremely hard worker and has become a huge source of positivity throughout my day. I am grateful for her.

The principal I work with is a mentor, friend and confidant. Without him, I don’t know if I would have succeeded as much as I have in this role. He taught me what it means to lead with pride, while still being true to myself. I have learned so very much from him, and I will always look up to him as one of the greatest men I know. I am grateful for him.

My students are an entire other realm of joy! It never fails that even on my very worst day, a kiddo full of light will (for no particular reason at all) give me a high-five in the hallway, and suddenly all is well again. I often think of their own struggles and how resilient they are. I think of the unfortunate circumstances that some of them have been through, yet they show up here, to this house, hoping for a better life. How grateful we should all be for the students that give us our careers and motivate our “Why”.

Last, but certainly not least, I am lucky to have the friends and family that I do. They have been an immense support system, cheering me on throughout my career, and in life. I am grateful for them.

No matter what you contemplate being grateful for during this holiday season, I hope you are able to take a moment and give thanks to those you work for and with. How fortunate we are to have our positions where each and every day we have a chance to change a life, coach a teacher, support a parent and grow as individuals. They say that in any stressful moment, if you pause to think of three things you are grateful for in your life, that it will completely transform your stress levels; What are your three things? Life is so very short, so make sure to take a moment to write that note, or tell them in person why you are thankful for them.

Happy Holidays to our MASSP family, and may you always find joy in your day.
