For years I felt that the only professional organizational membership I needed was with MASSP. Don’t get me wrong — MASSP is incredible and remains an essential resource in my role as a building principal. However, the addition of NASSP membership over the last two years has become indispensable for me. As I transition into my new role as the NASSP Coordinator on the MASSP Board of Directors, I want to share the importance of adding national membership alongside our state association.

Both the Professional+ and Executive MASSP Memberships include NASSP membership. The Executive MASSP Membership is the most cost-effective option, providing all of MASSP’s premier resources and services to building leaders, plus NASSP membership.

The partnership between MASSP and NASSP is stronger than ever, with a renewed focus from the national level to provide Principals across the country with professional development opportunities, conferences, access to research-based and peer-tested resources, and leadership networks. NASSP is dedicated to elevating and amplifying the voices of school and student leaders through their magazine, blog, social media, national survey and news media, ensuring that your voice is heard and your needs are met.

As a member of NASSP, you'll receive:

  • Up to $2,000,000 Liability Insurance: This benefit provides peace of mind by offering financial protection against legal claims or disputes, allowing you to focus on your job without the looming worry of unforeseen liabilities.
  • Up to $10,000 Legal Fee Reimbursement: This program reimburses legal costs you may incur, safeguarding your career and personal assets, and freeing you from the financial burden that can accompany legal challenges.
  • Subscription to Principal Leadership Magazine and Principal's Update: Stay ahead of the curve with cutting-edge insights, expert opinions, and real-world strategies delivered straight to your mailbox, empowering you to lead more effectively and make data-driven decisions.
  • Eligibility for National Principal of the Year: A prestigious recognition opportunity that not only elevates your professional standing but also serves as a testament to your skills, achievements and contributions to the educational community.
  • Exclusive Professional Development and Networking Opportunities: Gain a competitive edge through special access to high-quality training sessions and valuable networking events, enabling you to continuously sharpen your skills and expand your professional circle.
  • Research-Based and Peer-Tested Resources: Empower your decision-making and strategy with credible, research-backed tools and information, ensuring that your actions are both effective and well-informed.

As a 20-year principal, I believe that the Liability Insurance and Legal Fee Reimbursement alone are worth the membership cost. My district covers my MASSP Professional Membership. I have upgraded my membership using my building budget to the Executive Membership because it includes our school's MASC/MAHS Student Leadership Membership.

If you would like to discuss NASSP and the value of the MASSP Executive or Professional+ Membership, please feel free to reach out to me at jmessenger@portageps.org.

Together, let's continue to strengthen our professional community and enhance our leadership capabilities.
