It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is right around the corner and summer will be here before we know it. When we thought of summer, we decided to ask eight members some questions regarding summer programing for Middle School, if they are planning to hold in-person programming, what the program is going to look like, and resources they have available to share. Check out what our eight members shared!

We are currently planning for summer programming. At this point in time, we are exploring three-hour sessions and two-week rotations across our three triads. For the three hours, we will focus on math, ELA, and a themed elective. Fridays will be a community activity that will be open to more than the students enrolled in the camp. We are also exploring the possibility of having high school students support these camps/summer learning opportunities. Additionally, we are looking at having students participate in tutoring in reading and math, using iReady diagnostic results to identify strengths and weaknesses.

The logistics for our summer program are still being finalized.  The following plan is in development and anticipated for EHS Secondary Campus Students:

  • Title I 8th Grade Enrichment (primarily academic):  Students will participate in an enrichment opportunity that supports ELA and Mathematics instruction. Students will have an opportunity to work directly with teachers, based on their NWEA score.  Targeted academic areas of needed support will be provided in Reading, Writing and Mathematics, through various opportunities using Edmentum, Google Classroom, and direct instruction. Program schedule has yet to be finalized.
  • Title IV Whole Child (skills-building):  During this program, students will be exposed to various opportunities that will support their social and emotional well-being. This enrichment program will provide targeted mentoring opportunities to our female and male students in the areas of self-esteem, self-care, maintaining good academic standing, healthy lifestyle, and Artistic Expression.  Additionally, students will have the opportunity to earn a CPR/First-Aid Certification. Program tentatively scheduled to run Monday through Thursday, from 9am - 2pm.
  • 9th - 12th Online Summer Credit Recovery (primarily academic):  This is our traditional summer program offered to students who are deficient in credits which would be applied to earn their high school diploma. Students have the option to work at their own pace, any day/time.

Summer brochure is currently in development.

Four different opportunities:

  1. Credit acceleration - This is connected with our high school summer school so there are options in math, science, social studies and ELA, but our 7th and 8th grade students primarily take Math and PE classes.  The math is for students who want to advance in their math scheduling. Our students who participate in band or orchestra typically take PE in the summer to provide room in their schedules for other classes in high school. Students may earn a maximum of 1 credit in this program. June 21 - July 21 (M-Th)
  2. 7/8th grade ELA/Math Refresher course - A course designed to re-teach and pre-teach concepts in the middle school ELA and Math courses.  This is for students who need more supports and to help them find more success in these courses. June 21 - July 21 (M-Th)
  3. ELL Summer Course - This is a course designed to support our students in the English Language Development program to advance in their English proficiency and receive reinforcement of concepts in their content courses.  June 21 - July 22 (M-Th)
  4. Intervention based program - Invitation based program for our students who we have identified, through data, as needing additional supports for their learning. This will be a multifaceted program including STEM projects. July 26 - August 19 (M-Th).

Is your school/district planning to offer an in-person summer learning opportunity for middle school students?

Maybe - still in discussion.

We are looking into providing an in-person summer school option for our families in K-8 for our district. We are still looking into the availability of grant money from the state to fund the program and also looking at student need and staff support to run the program. If we run the program, it would most likely be tailored to our students in need of extra support and not an acceleration program.

We are lucky that our local ISD (Kent ISD) offers many summer programs that our students can benefit from attending.
