The entrance buzzed with excitement as Grandville Public Schools and Grandville High School staff, board members, students and special guests from the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals gathered in anticipation of Principal Adam Lancto’s arrival. Returning from a meeting, Lancto was greeted with an enthusiastic surprise as MASSP announced him as Michigan’s 2025-26 High School Principal of the Year.
“Adam’s commitment to collaborative leadership, innovation and personalized student support is truly inspiring,” said Wendy Zdeb, MASSP Executive Director. “He has dedicated himself to fostering an environment where both students and staff thrive, making him a standout leader in a field of exceptional nominees.”
The award recognizes principals who exemplify collaborative leadership, excellence in curriculum and instruction, and meaningful connections with students, staff and families.
“When talking about Mr. Lancto, the words most commonly brought up are loving, inclusive and passionate,” said Sam Hungerford, GHS 12th Grade Student.
In his letter of recommendation, Hungerford shared a personal story about going through a difficult family situation with people treating him differently because of another’s actions and how Lancto went “above and beyond” because he cares.
“Suddenly all I could feel was the love and care … This is something I never had experienced before, this was not only a person doing their job, it was someone truly caring for me and wanting me to be OK,” Hungerford said. “I am now able to walk in the high school with a sense of protection.
“I know that one man will always have my back, whether it be comforting me on a bad day or just simply seeing me as me, I know school is a place I want to be because when I see that toothy smile and hear a ‘hello,’ I know I am home and I know today is going to be a good day. The day my life changed forever and the day everyone began to look at me differently, there was one man who never did such; I am proud to have the honor of knowing him as Principal Lancto.”
Lancto’s tenure at Grandville High School, where he has spent his entire 16-year career in education, is marked by numerous accomplishments. He has spearheaded the development of Professional Learning Communities, ensuring alignment with Michigan Anchor Standards and SAT Skills, and has championed the implementation of the school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports system, known as GRIT.
“Adam is not only an advocate for students, but also a steadfast champion for staff,” said Ashlee Buchholz, Grandville High School Assistant Principal and Lancto’s nominator. “He creates an environment where both students and teachers feel valued, supported and empowered to grow.”
Lancto’s leadership extends beyond academics. He has worked to establish a Teacher Academy in partnership with the Kent Career Technical Center and introduced unique initiatives like “Gone Boarding” in the woodshop curriculum. He has overseen the creation of innovative programs such as aeronautics, diesel technology, automotive repair and advanced placement classes, ensuring students graduate with college and career readiness skills.
“He provides clear direction and focus, ensuring that all programs and practices of the building align with the district’s vision, mission and overall goals,” said Troy Ungrey, Grandville Education Association President. “His collaborative approach promotes ownership among all stakeholders, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility.”
Students, staff and community members praise Lancto for his dedication, humility and student-first approach – describing him as determined, respected, open, warm, inviting and compassionate.
“Mr. Lancto has also been instrumental in creating a positive school culture,” said Matthew Cook, Assistant Principal at GHS. “Adam leads with a servant’s heart, always putting the needs of others first. His influence is instrumental in ensuring that every student not only achieves academically but also feels a sense of beginning and purpose in our school.”
Lancto will represent Michigan as the state’s nominee for the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ High School Principal of the Year award competition, with the national award to be presented in July 2025 at the Recognition Gala during NASSP’s Conference.
“It is a privilege to honor Adam during a time when leadership in education is more important than ever,” Zdeb said. “His vision, resilience and unwavering focus on student success make him an excellent representative for Michigan.”
