Pioneer Middle School Leader Named Michigan’s 2025 Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year

The Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals recognized Christopher Moore, Assistant Principal of Pioneer Middle School, as the 2025 Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year for Michigan. The announcement was made during a surprise celebration at the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Board of Education meeting Nov.12, with many members of the Pioneer Middle School community present to share in the excitement.

“MASSP’s Administrator of the Year awards honor leaders who demonstrate exceptional dedication and impact within their schools and communities,” said Wendy Zdeb, MASSP Executive Director. “Chris exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding Assistant Principal through his unwavering support for staff, active presence at school events, and steadfast encouragement of students.”

To qualify for this prestigious recognition, candidates must exhibit excellence in collaborative leadership, curriculum development, assessment, and fostering a positive school culture that engages staff, students, and families.

“Chris exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional leader – inspiring, compassionate and dedicated,” said James Lockwood, President of the Plymouth-Canton Education Association. “His commitment to Pioneer Middle School has not only shaped the school’s trajectory but has also inspired all those who have had the privilege of working alongside him.”

Moore’s nomination received overwhelming support from colleagues, teachers, students, parents and community members. Testimonials highlighted his leadership style, ability to create a nurturing school environment and positive impact on the Pioneer Middle School community.

“His recognized high character and caring personality have allowed him to develop trusting relationships with parents,” said Philip Freeman, former Pioneer Middle School Principal and retired Lakeshore Public School Superintendent. “Students appreciate his humor and his kindhearted approach. Staff trust him and feel empowered and supported in their work.”

Kevin Rhein, Principal of Pioneer Middle School, echoed those sentiments.

“He is a professional educator who constantly strives to improve his performance and give students the best experience possible,” Rhein said. “He has remarkable management skills and takes time to build positive relations with his students and the community.”

Moore’s dedication to education spans 26 years, including 24 years at Pioneer Middle School with 12 as an administrator. Known for his innovative and supportive approach, Moore is celebrated as a role model and advocate for students and staff alike.

“Chris’s genuine care and empathy for those he serves shine through in every interaction, making him not only an effective administrator but also a trusted mentor and confidant,” said Kurt Tyszkiewicz, P-CCS Assistant Superintendent of Student Services.

As Michigan’s Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year, Moore will represent the state in the National Association of Secondary School Principals’ (NASSP) 2025 Middle School National Assistant Principal of the Year program. NASSP will announce finalists and the national winner in the spring.

“Chris is a true leader with a vision centered on student success and staff support,” Zdeb said. “We are proud to have him represent Michigan as the 2025 Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year.”

Gesturing to the crowd of people who gathered to support and celebrate him, Moore said “This is why I won – because of the amazing people I work with … and the students; it’s just been awesome. It means a lot.”
