- Experience: What is your current administrative position? How long have you served in that capacity? What was your path to obtain it?
I am honored to serve as the Principal of Petoskey Middle School, a role I have held since 2015. Prior to this, I spent four years as the Assistant Principal at Petoskey High School. My career in education began in rural Alaska, where I taught multiple subjects to students in grades 6 through 12. Upon returning to Michigan, I served as a high school biology teacher and wrestling coach in Hart before transitioning into administration in Petoskey. - Performance: Tell us about any awards, accolades or important points of pride related to your career.
Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to learn from outstanding mentors who have shaped my leadership journey. By following their guidance, I was honored to be named the 2024 Michigan Principal of the Year by MASSP. Shortly thereafter, I was also recognized as a finalist for the 2025 National Principal of the Year by NASSP. These accolades have provided invaluable learning opportunities and have further driven my commitment to leadership, particularly in advocating for public education and the principalship. I currently co-host NASSP’s Middle School Leaders Network, which is a monthly virtual meeting with middle level principals from across the country. - Education: What post-secondary degrees have you obtained and from where? What additional continuing education have you received? Do you have a particular area of focus/expertise?
I earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Central Michigan University. (Fire Up Chips!) In 2023, I further enhanced my leadership skills by completing the Michigan Leadership Institute’s Aspiring Superintendent Preparation Academy, an exceptional professional learning experience. I am committed to exploring and sharing insights on effective leadership, particularly within the public school setting. Leading teams through continuous improvement presents challenges, but it is a critical component of successfully guiding a school community. - Statement of Intent: Why are you seeking this position on the MASSP Board of Directors?
I am committed to advancing the work MASSP has done to advocate for public education and its fundamental role in our communities, as well as advocate for the principalship. I believe serving on the MASSP Board of Directors is a powerful way to amplify that advocacy.
Principals hold a unique position, bridging the gap between classroom instruction and the complex regulations schools must navigate. Our voices are essential in shaping educational policies, as we have firsthand insight into how these decisions impact students, educators, and school communities. Building strong relationships among educational leaders is critical. Strengthening collaboration between superintendents, principals, and teachers can drive meaningful improvements in teaching and learning across our state.
