Statements

  1. Experience: What is your current administrative position? How long have you served in that capacity? What was your path to obtain it?
I have been an Assistant Principal since August 2013. My 11 years in administration have included time in a K-8 Charter School in Washington, DC, an alternative education 6th – 9th grade school in Annapolis, Maryland, and my current position in Portage, Michigan. After college, my teaching career began in Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland as a 6th grade mathematics teacher. I was a middle school mathematics teacher for the duration of my time in the classroom. As a teacher, I regularly sought out leadership opportunities in hopes of pursuing an administrative role at some point. My father was an administrator for several years and once I entered education, I aspired to have a similar impact in school communities as an administrator.

  2. Performance: Tell us about any awards, accolades or important points of pride related to your career.
I’ve presented at several conferences around the country on a variety of topics such as Building a Social Media Brand Plan, Revolutionizing Strategic Conversations for School Leaders, and Creating a Project Based Learning Program in Alternative Education. I was honored as an Outstanding Educator in Gifted and Talented Education by the State of Maryland in 2013. I was the lead administrator of a team that developed a Project Based Learning program in an Alternative Education school in Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Maryland. I’ve continued my work in PBL by developing a Middle School Summer Learning Experience program for Portage Public Schools. I’m a member of the inaugural class of MASSP Michigan Leadership Fellows and currently on the MHSEL eSports Board of Advisors.

  3. Education: What post-secondary degrees have you obtained and from where? What additional continuing education have you received? Do you have a particular area of focus/expertise?
I have a Bachelor’s of Arts in Elementary Education with a focus in Mathematics and Language Arts from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor.

I have a Master’s of Science in Adult Education with a focus in School Administration from Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland. My goal is to pursue a Doctorate degree in the near future.

  4. Statement of Intent: Why are you seeking this position on the MASSP Board of Directors?
Since returning to Michigan in August 2020, I have been amazed at how aware and in tune MASSP is with education at all levels (school, district, state). There is a passion that reverberates amongst the board members for wanting to provide educators across the state with information, resources, and support in realistic, creative, and innovative ways. MASSP has been at the forefront of the changing landscape of education and ensures that its members are aware of what’s going on as well as how it impacts the work we do on a daily basis. I believe in “boots on the ground” work and MASSP has consistently shown me that this approach is how they operate. I would like to be a part of this work in supporting my colleagues in my region & around the state as a member of the MASSP Board of Directors.
