Since its inception in the 2020–21 school year, the Michigan High School Esports League has experienced remarkable growth, establishing itself as a premier platform for competitive gaming in the state. MHSEL launched with only 24 schools and 34 teams. Now entering its sixth year, the league boasts participation from more than 200 schools, 840+ teams, with more than 3,700 student participants across Michigan.
MHSEL offers a diverse array of 15 popular game titles, including “League of Legends,” “Rocket League,” “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” and “Valorant,” providing students with opportunities to compete at both state and national levels.
In recognition of their outstanding contributions to the esports community, MHSEL Director Ryan Cayce and Assistant Director Maggie Helmer were each honored with the 2025 PlayVS Community Trailblazer Award. This national accolade celebrates individuals who have gone above and beyond to build, support and uplift their esports communities.
PlayVS commended their efforts and said that Cayce’s and Helmer’s contributions have stood out to them – from the way they’ve championed students to how they’ve advanced access and equity in scholastic esports, the impact hasn’t gone unnoticed.
PlayVS CEO, leaders and staff members surprised Ryan and Maggie in a virtual meeting to announce the awards.
“We’re incredibly honored and humbled to receive the 2025 PlayVS Community Trailblazer Award,” Helmer said. “This recognition truly reflects the passion, dedication and collaboration of the entire MHSEL community.”
The duo has worked year round to build the program into what it is today.
“We are grateful to work alongside so many amazing educators and partners who believe in the power of esports to connect, inspire and uplift students across Michigan,” Cayce said.
Looking ahead, MHSEL plans to expand its reach, offering inclusive and competitive environments that allow student-athletes to build critical skill sets, explore vast career paths and contribute to their school culture within varsity esports.
