As reported last week by the Michigan Department of Education, Dr. Glenn M. Maleyko has been selected to be Michigan’s next state superintendent. As the current superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools, he works directly with many MASSP members and served on an EdCon panel in 2024.
MASSP Executive Director Wendy Zdeb said she could not be happier with the State Board of Education’s decision to name Dr. Maleyko as our next Superintendent of Public Instruction in Michigan.
“I have known Glenn as a colleague for many years,” Zdeb said. “He is an outstanding leader and an even better person. Glenn is exactly what we need right now, someone who will listen and collaborate, someone who understands big systems issues and someone who has implemented innovative practices. I look forward to working with Dr. Maleyko and supporting his vision to move education forward in Michigan.”
Five Michigan Leadership Fellows are educational leaders in Dearborn Public Schools and have all worked under Maleyko’s leadership.
“We’re incredibly proud of Dr. Maleyko for earning this honor. His leadership in Dearborn has been marked by a deep commitment to student empowerment and a strong belief in supporting and developing educators,” said Douglas Radcliffe, Dearborn Woodworth Middle School Assistant Principal and Mi Leadership Fellow. “While it’s bittersweet to see him leave our district, it’s encouraging to know that his impact will now extend across the entire state.
“Michigan will benefit from a leader who not only understands the importance of equity and innovation in education, but also champions the voices of students and invests in the growth of teachers.”
MASSP Board of Directors At-Large Representative, Nicole Rabac, is the Dearborn Woodworth Middle School Principal. She said Dr. Maleyko’s appointment as State Superintendent is both a tremendous honor and a well-deserved recognition of his unwavering dedication to students and public education.
“His leadership in Dearborn has been nothing short of transformative,” she said. “With a steadfast commitment to equity and inclusion, he has consistently placed students at the heart of every decision, ensuring that all young people, regardless of background, have access to the opportunities they need to succeed academically and to grow socially and emotionally.”
Rabac also described Dr. Maleyko’s departure from Dearborn as “bittersweet.”
“We are deeply proud that the values and vision he has modeled here will now extend across the state,” she said. “Michigan’s students and educators will benefit greatly from a leader whose passion for education is matched by his ability to inspire, unite, and act with integrity. Dr. Maleyko’s legacy in Dearborn is one of innovation, advocacy, and a relentless belief in the potential of every learner. His emphasis on both rigorous academics and social-emotional learning has helped create schools where students feel valued, supported and prepared for the future.”
Expressing her gratitude for the impact he has made in Dearborn Schools, she said she’s confident that as State Superintendent he will continue to advance an educational system where all students are seen, supported and empowered to thrive.
