The Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals, in partnership with the Michigan Association of Student Councils and Honor Societies, is proud to recognize four outstanding school leaders as the 2026 Michigan Administrators of the Year. Each year, MASSP honors exceptional secondary school administrators who demonstrate visionary leadership, dedication to student success, and commitment to advancing education in Michigan.
Tara Becker-Utess, Mason High School Assistant Principal
On October 29, Tara Becker-Utess, Assistant Principal at Mason High School, walked into a scheduled staff meeting only to be surprised by MASSP and her district with the announcement that she had been selected as Michigan’s 2026 High School Assistant Principal of the Year.
“In my 27 years in education, I have never seen an assistant principal that is of the same caliber as Tara,” Mason High School Principal Myriah Lillie said. “Not only is she incredibly intelligent and extremely hard-working, she has a unique way of building solid relationships built on care and concern for both our staff and students.”
Mark Rummel (Principal) & Maha Fayad (Assistant Principal), O.L. Smith Middle School
History was made on October 30 with a double surprise announcement recognizing two outstanding administrators at O.L. Smith Middle School in Dearborn. Mark Rummel captured the 2026 Michigan Middle School Principal of the Year and Maha Fayad won 2026 Michigan Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year in front of their colleagues, friends and families.
“Each and every day Principal Rummel and Assistant Principal Fayad provide leadership that inspires their team to create a culture of learning and success at O.L. Smith,” said Dr. Glenn Maleyko, Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent and Michigan’s next State Superintendent of Public Instruction. “They demonstrate unwavering professionalism and a commitment to ensure all students feel welcome and are prepared for high school.”
Tiela Schurman, Midland High School Principal
On November 6 with balloons decorating the gym and a pep band setting the tone, Tiela Schurman’s family, students and colleagues were there to cheer for her when MASSP Executive Director Wendy Zdeb made the surprise announcement recognizing her as the Michigan 2026 High School Principal of the Year.
“Tiela leads Midland High with heart and genuine care, fostering a culture of belonging, joy and success,” said Midland Public Schools Superintendent Penny Miller-Nelson. “She works to create an environment in which every student is included and has an opportunity to thrive.”
These outstanding administrators exemplify the leadership, passion and commitment that drive student success across Michigan. MASSP extends heartfelt congratulations to each honoree for their accomplishments and continued positive influence. Each will go on to represent Michigan in NASSP’s National Award program.
