A Vision Takes Shape
In early 2011, MASSP Executive Director Wendy Zdeb envisioned a way to strengthen Michigan’s educational leadership pipeline by creating a high-quality training program, designed and facilitated by experienced practitioners, that would result in MDE-required administrator certification for aspiring school leaders.
That vision became the Path to Leadership program.
To bring this program to fruition, Wendy turned to trusted educators. Among those early contributors was Dave Powers, then President of the MASSP Board of Directors with years of proven leadership experience. Dave accepted the challenge with the same energy and dedication he brings to every aspect of his life.
A Founding Facilitator
From PTL’s inception, Dave has served as a course facilitator for all 14 years of the program’s existence. Yet his title of “instructor” only begins to describe his impact. Dave has been a mentor, a guide, and an inspiration to hundreds of current and aspiring school leaders across Michigan. His PTL participants often speak fondly of his Sunday evening virtual sessions, where practical leadership wisdom and genuine encouragement meet in equal measure.
Leadership Beyond the Classroom
After an accomplished 40-year career as an educator in multiple roles, Dave retired as a school administrator in 2022. Fortunately for PTL, he continued to facilitate courses and remained deeply connected to the next generation of leaders. Not long after retiring, a district in need of a compassionate and experienced administrator reached out to him for “a short-term assignment.” In true Dave fashion, he stepped in to help—and that short-term commitment turned into nearly two additional years of service. Now, after “re-retiring,” Dave is taking a well-earned step into full retirement.
A Lasting Legacy
“I am so encouraged by all those who are answering ‘The CALL’ to be educational leaders of tomorrow, and I am so proud to have been part of their journey through Path to Leadership.”
— Dave Powers
Even in his farewell message, Dave’s humility and gratitude shone brightly—a true reflection of his servant leadership and heart for others. On behalf of MASSP and the Path to Leadership community, we extend our deepest appreciation to Dave Powers for his years of mentorship, inspiration, and service to Michigan’s aspiring school leaders.
We wish him the joyful and well-deserved retirement he has so faithfully earned.
Thank you, Dave — for your leadership, your example, and your unwavering belief in the potential of others.
