The commercial tobacco and vapor industries continue to evolve rapidly, using sophisticated market research and consumer analytics to identify emerging preferences and trends. These industries invest millions of dollars annually in product development, branding, and marketing strategies designed to attract both new and existing consumers. Youth and young adults are often among the populations most heavily influenced when these industries identify products, features, or designs that resonate with specific consumer demographics.
Product evolution within the commercial tobacco and vapor industries is not limited to the introduction of entirely new products. Equally important are the modifications and enhancements to existing products that increase their appeal, concealability, or usability. These strategic changes can significantly influence consumer interest and product uptake, particularly among younger audiences.
Although e-cigarettes have been available in the United States since 2007, the expansion of their capabilities and design features have only recently accelerated dramatically over the past several years. Early e-cigarette devices were often large, bulky, and easily recognizable. In response to consumer preferences, manufacturers have steadily transitioned toward increasingly compact, sleek, and discreet designs that are easier to conceal and use without detection.
One of the most notable examples of this trend was the introduction and widespread popularity of the USB flash drive-style e-cigarettes. The design demonstrated the marketed demand for products that could blend into everyday environments and avoid immediate recognition. Building on this success, manufacturers have continued to develop products that mimic common consumer items frequently used by youth and young adults. Today, e-cigarettes devices are available in designs resembling wireless earbuds, smartwatches, inhalers, cosmetic products, and other personal electronic accessories. Some manufacturers have also incorporated e-cigarette technology into wearable items such as backpacks, hooded sweatshirts, and other apparel, further increasing concealment and addiction. These products are often marketed with modern aesthetics, high-tech features, customizable options, and flavors that appeal to younger consumers.
The design is not the only feature the industries are using to increase usage. The Youth Tobacco Product Monitoring Project recently highlighted a growing concern in a recent bulletin regarding the increasing number of puffs available in e-cigarette devices. During the 2023-2024 back-to-school season, e-cigarettes entered the market typically containing approximately 9,000 puffs per device. By the 2025-2026 back-to-school year, products offering 10,000 to 30,000 puffs had become increasingly common. During the current 2026-2027 back-to-school season, e-cigarette products with 30,000 to 100,000 puffs are now being marketed and sold. A review of these findings by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Tobacco Section’s youth and young adult e-cigarette showed devices offering up to 100,000 puffs that are affordable, appealing, and readily accessible to youth through online retailers.
Nicotine pouches have emerged as one of the fastest-growing commercial tobacco products in the United States and are now the second most commonly used tobacco product among youth and young adults. According to sales data from the Tobacco Epidemic Evaluation Network (TEEN+) Study, nicotine pouches sales increased by 269.2% between January 2023 and December 2025, demonstrating the rapid popularity growth and market penetration of this product category.[1]
Nicotine pouches are available in a wide range of flavors and nicotine strengths, with some products containing nicotine levels that may exceed those found in other commercially available nicotine products, like combustible cigarettes. The availability of flavors, discreet use, lack of smoke or aerosol, and ease of concealment increase the appeal among youth and young adult commercial tobacco users. TEEN+ data indicates that nicotine pouches are increasing use among adolescents, in 2025 approximately 2.3% of high school students and 0.9% of middle school students reported current use of nicotine pouches. The prevalence rates are a substantial increase in comparison to years prior, with an approximate fourfold increase over shorter period of time.1
The rapid rise in nicotine concentration in popular youth commercial tobacco products is concerning due to early nicotine exposure during adolescence and adverse affects this substance has on brain developing, including attention, learning, mood regulation, and impulse control. Early nicotine exposure also increases the risk of developing nicotine dependence and increases the likelihood of using other commercial tobacco and nicotine products as they get older.
As commercial tobacco and vapor industries continue to diversify their products offerings, awareness and education regarding emerging products and rapid progression of technology. Prevention programs, schools, healthcare providers, parents, and community members should raise awareness of emerging products, designs, and marketing tactics to help communities better identify and address factors that contribute to youth tobacco and nicotine use and addiction.
