Keynotes:

Legal Update and Scenarios - Anya Lusk, Attorney with Lusk and Albertson
Lusk and Albertson is a school law firm that regularly provides updates for MASSP member on new laws and litigation that directly impacts day to day work in schools.  This legal update will include information on new legislation around marijuana and vaping as well as topics frequently encountered by secretaries such as FERPA and the dispensing of medication.  To make this session more engaging Anya Lusk will also provide a few case law scenarios and the audience will be asked to discuss how they would handle the particular situation. Ms. Lusk will explain the actions of the district and the courts findings.  Time will be provided at the end for questions and answers.

Communication: Your Traits, Your Impact - Steve Seward, MASSP
Have you ever wondered how to build a working relationship with someone who thinks, acts, and behaves differently than you?  Listening, knowing your intended outcome, and choosing congruent behaviors is essential to the role of an administrative assistant.  Let’s explore how your communication and ways of interacting might be leading your successes or barriers.

Ed Evaluation 101 - Colin Ripmaster, MASSP
The world in which schools operate today is very different from the one we worked just a few years ago - andall signs point to more changes ahead. Budget deficits, external accountability, social media, emergencydrills and crisis response are rewriting administrator job descriptions every year, making them more complex than ever. What hasn’t changed is that great schools have great leaders. And the only way to be a greatleader is to have a great administrative assistant. In short, your school’s success begins and ends with you. In this session, participants will learn statutory requirements for teacher evaluation, and practical strategies tosupport building administrators in balancing competing demands for time and attention, in order to collab-oratively, and purposely equip, encourage and challenge each individual in the school community - students and adults alike - to reach his or her highest potential.

Become a Google Calendar & Google Drive Rockstar! - Ryan Cayce, MASSP
The role of the school secretary is incredibly hectic so why not leverage your office apps to become more efficient and save time when planning, scheduling and communicating?  In this session, participants will explore time-saving tips to maximize and sync Google Calendar and Google Drive, as well as exploring other third-party apps like Doodle.  Let’s ROCK! 

Communication is Key - Wendy Zdeb & Ryan Cayce, MASSP
Proactively providing communication to stakeholders can save time, help the building to run smoothly and allow everyone to feel in the loop on what is going on at the school.  During this session we will share strategies for: a weekly communication for staff, using Facebook and Twitter to communicate with stakeholders and how to use Canva to create flyers for upcoming events and activities.

Restorative Practices 101 - Tammy Jackson, MASSP
In an important supporting role, a building secretary is asked to support an initiative they don’t understand. Without an understanding, the actions taken by teaching staff and administration is puzzling. Restorative Practices is a student management initiative being utilized by many schools. It looks different and feels different than traditional discipline. As a key person who supports students, secretaries need to understand restorative practices.

Student Mental Health Warning Signs - Lauren Kazee
This session will provide an overview of student mental health signs and symptoms including 1)Attendees will learn about common mental health diagnosis and signs and symptoms for adolescents. 2) Attendees will gain information about resources Michigan has to support student mental health and well-being.  3) Attendees will become knowledgeable about ways to best support students who are experiencing mental health difficulties.

The Secretaries Role in a Crisis - Tammy Jackson, MASSP
In most situations, the secretary will play a key role in crisis response. What is done in advance to prepare for a response is key to a successful response. In this session, you will learn about what you can do to be prepared.
