Introducing CODE & CONQUER: A Statewide Middle School Game Design Challenge

The Michigan High School Esports League (MHSEL) is excited to introduce CODE & CONQUER, a new statewide video game design challenge for Michigan middle school students in grades 6-8. This competition provides an opportunity for students to develop critical thinking, creativity, and technical skills through game development.

Engaging Students Through Game Design

CODE & CONQUER is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of coding in a way that is engaging and relevant to their interests. Using Code.org’s Game Lab, students will create an original video game that highlights an aspect of Michigan’s history, geography, natural resources, or culture.

Through this challenge, students will gain hands-on experience in coding, problem-solving, and game development while working individually or in teams of up to three. The competition is an excellent way to integrate STEM learning into school programs, whether as part of a technology curriculum, an after-school club, or an esports program.

  • Students may compete individually or in teams of up to three
