Investing in Ourselves to Better Serve Our Schools

I know how hard it can be to step away from our buildings. There’s always something that needs our attention, and it’s easy to feel like we have to be there every moment to keep things running smoothly. Stepping away, even for a short time, can feel uncomfortable — what if something goes wrong? What if we’re needed? The fear of the unknown often keeps us tethered to our desks, our radios and our routines.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how important it is for us to invest in our own growth—both personally and professionally. We encourage our staff and students to keep learning and pushing themselves, but are we doing the same for ourselves? Taking time to step away, gain fresh perspectives, and connect with other leaders makes us better for the people we serve.

Seek out opportunities that allow you to grow as a professional and as a person. I’ve given myself more permission this year to do those things and it’s been a game-changer for myself and my school. One cohort I joined this year was the Innovative Learners Network through MASSP. It has been energizing to collaborate with like-minded educators from around the state about all things innovation. I am especially excited to get to EdCon this year to connect with those folks and take in some breakout sessions.

So, I just want to say: It’s OK to leave the building sometimes. It’s OK to trust your team. And it’s more than OK to put time into your own development — you’ll come back with more energy, new ideas and an even stronger sense of purpose.
