MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership competitions are designed to be more than events or awards. When schools use them intentionally, they become powerful tools for student growth, culture-building, and meaningful school improvement.
Our three core competitions, Michigan Student Voice, Student Showcase Presentations and Student Photovoice, move students from participation to impact, building critical leadership skills while giving schools clear, actionable insight into what’s working, what’s not, and where to go next. The real win isn’t the competition – it’s the growth, insight and change that follows.
Michigan Student Voice: Amplifying Student Solutions
What it is:
Michigan Student Voice challenges students to identify a real issue in their school, develop a solution, and present their presentation in a fast-paced, TED-talk style keynote during our Regional Connect events.
Why it matters:
Students build confidence, critical thinking and communication skills while learning how to frame problems, defend ideas and respond to feedback – exactly the skills we want in a Portrait of a Graduate.
For schools, Student Voice creates structured, respectful space for feedback that often doesn’t surface elsewhere. Schools regularly walk away with clearer insight, stronger trust with students, and ideas that can immediately influence decision-making and school improvement efforts. All driven by student perspective!
Student Showcase: Elevating What’s Working
What it is:
Student Showcase highlights student-created programs, events, and initiatives that have made a positive difference in their school (community engagement/service, anti-vaping campaigns, mentor programs, school morale and so much more.)
Why it matters:
The real value is in the reflection. Students must explain why their work mattered, how it was executed, and what they would improve. That process builds ownership, accountability and strong presentation skills that transfer far beyond the competition.
For schools, Showcase reinforces a culture of intentional leadership, less about running activities, more about creating impact. It surfaces best practices, validates student leadership work, and encourages programs that are sustainable, not just popular. Students in attendance leave not only inspired, but with brand new ideas to bolster their own school-wide impact.
Student Photovoice: Capturing the Student Experience
What it is:
Student Photovoice uses photography and reflection to capture student perspectives on leadership, culture and the school experience. Complete with a student-centered action plan to drive change and address student perceived issues.
Why it matters:
Photovoice engages students who may not always step into traditional leadership roles, building empathy, reflection and storytelling skills with purpose. It proves that leadership can be creative, personal, and powerful – and you don’t need a microphone or stage presence to lead.
For schools, Photovoice humanizes student experience. Images paired with student narratives often spark deeper conversations than surveys or data alone, helping principals better understand climate, belonging and student needs.

Student Leadership Competitions will be on full display during our Regional Connect events, with the Top 22 Student Showcases and the top seven Michigan Student Voice competitors moving on to compete at the 2026 Student Leadership State Conference.
