The Careers Students Discover When Curiosity Takes Over: Learning Blade in Action in Michigan

Last week in Hamtramck, I watched something remarkable happen in a middle school classroom.

Students at Kosciuszko Middle School stood beside project stations explaining how a complex supply chain works – from raw materials all the way to shipbuilding. One group demonstrated 3D-printed propellers and how design changes affected boat performance. Another walked visitors through motor testing and troubleshooting. At another table, students mapped how engineers, technicians, and logistics specialists work together to build a naval fleet.

But what made the experience stand out wasn’t just the projects.

As they presented their work, students peppered visiting leaders with questions about workforce needs, training pathways, and the scale of modern shipbuilding. Leaders from the Navy’s workforce development program, the University of Michigan’s Naval Architecture program, and Macomb Community College’s Maritime Manufacturing program moved from station to station, answering questions and diving into discussions sparked by the students themselves.

For many of the students, these were careers they hadn’t even heard of a few weeks prior, but they spoke about them with confidence and curiosity.

The classroom demonstrations were part of the national launch of “Assemble the Fleet: Supply Chain in Motion,” a new Learning Blade mission connecting classroom learning to real-world careers in engineering, manufacturing, and logistics. Later in the day, students brought their questions to a moderated panel discussion with industry and education leaders, continuing the conversation about workforce needs and the future of shipbuilding.

Moments like this highlight why career exploration is becoming such an important conversation across Michigan.

At the Michigan CTE Summer Leadership Conference, Celena Mills, Director of the Office of Career and Technical Education at the Michigan Department of Education, emphasized the need to strengthen career exploration at both the middle and high school levels. Students are often asked to make decisions about coursework and career pathways before they fully understand the opportunities available to them.

Learning Blade is helping schools across Michigan address that challenge.

Learning Blade is a platform of STEM, computer science, and CTE career exploration resources – available to Michigan schools at no cost thanks to funding provided by the Maritime Industrial Base Program and BlueForge Alliance. Aligned with Michigan academic standards for grades 5-9, teachers across the state are using it in a variety of ways: some as part of career exploration electives, others to connect classroom lessons to real-world careers, and several as part of after-school or summer learning programs. In fact, about 30 percent of Learning Blade users in Michigan are high school students, showing how valuable career exploration remains even beyond middle school.

With AI Literacy Day approaching on March 27, many schools are looking for ways to introduce students to emerging technologies and the careers connected to them. Learning Blade helps make those connections through computer science focused missions and modules that make complex ideas accessible to middle school learners.

Students explore careers such as software engineers, cybersecurity specialists, data scientists, and cloud computing professionals, while learning how those roles help solve real-world challenges. In the Hack Attack mission, for example, students investigate how cybersecurity professionals respond when a school’s digital systems are compromised, exploring topics like web development, data protection, and digital communication.

In another mission, Rescue Robot, students examine robotics design concepts such as sensors, circuits, and programming logic, helping them see how coding, electronics, and engineering work together in modern technology careers.

Learning Blade also offers introductory modules focused on emerging technologies. The Introduction to AI module helps students understand how artificial intelligence works, how machine learning is used across industries, and how these technologies are shaping the future of work.

For schools introducing programming concepts, the Introduction to Coding module provides more than 20 hours of activities where students design games, program robots, build apps, and explore computer science careers.

For esports coaches and technology program leaders, these connections are especially powerful. Many of the skills students develop through gaming – strategic thinking, teamwork, and problem solving – are the same skills used in careers like software development, cybersecurity, robotics, and data science.

For school leaders looking to expand STEM and computer science career awareness, the opportunity is already available.
