As schools confront the dual challenges of learning loss and student engagement, authentic learning is more valuable than ever. Getting (and keeping) kids engaged is our biggest hurdle. - Deepen your understanding of the 6-12 Disciplinary Literacy standards so you can promote and guide the work of your team
In its fifth year, Disciplinary Literacy for Secondary Leaders is designed with today’s unique realities in mind–decreased student engagement, increased calls to improve literacy instruction at all levels, and concerns about teacher retention. For secondary principals, the alignment between Michigan’s amended literacy law (PA 146) and the Disciplinary Literacy Essentials represents a call to lead systemic, schoolwide literacy efforts. The GELN 6-12 Essentials extend this work into middle and high school, requiring leaders to ensure a seamless K–12 literacy system. Disciplinary literacy positions every teacher, across math, science, social studies, and the arts, as a literacy teacher, preventing literacy from being siloed. Principals play a central role in building the infrastructure for coaching, professional learning, data use, and family engagement that supports this work. Ultimately, this alignment is about equity and access, ensuring that all students are engaged and supported in mastering the literacy skills needed for success in school and beyond.
