By October, teacher and administrator evaluations should be underway. MCL 380.1249 and 380.1249b establish expectations for performance goals, observations and feedback intended to support professional growth. The challenge is ensuring these activities create opportunities to strengthen teaching and leadership in ways that benefit students. As you attend to teacher evaluations, don’t overlook your own. Have you and your evaluator established clear goals and expectations and planned opportunities for feedback and growth? Don’t wait until spring to discover that you and your evaluator had different understandings of your performance.
Experience helps principals recognize patterns and make sense of complicated situations when there isn’t much time to stop and think. Most of the time, that serves us well. But what happens when recognition becomes so automatic that we stop noticing what we actually observed and what experience has taught us to expect?
